    • Parenting Tip #20: Cultivate Reading

Timothy has progress tremendously in his development in the academic world. Such big word for small fellow. In his previous Kindy, he didn’t utter a word to his friends or teachers. I guess he was having fear of fierce teachers. The teachers could do anything to get him to read, participate or even speak. The teachers looked to me and complained everyday about him.

Ever since he moved to the current Tadika (run by my church) with friendly helpful teachers, he made progression. The reading report book changed from “cannot read” to “able to read with guidance” to “able to read softly” to “reading twice” Now he can read Peter & Jane series.

Peter & Jane series are a good series for your child to learn reading. Words are repeated and simple. They start with recognizing “The”, “a”, “here”, “and”, “I”,..etc.

As for Emily, gals being gals mature faster. She now can read 1a, 1b and trying out 2b. If you want to start your child with reading, go get the Peter & Jane series. Now anyone knows whether there is a malay version of Peter & Jane. I need to teach my children Bahasa Malaysia.

    1. in fact, I bought the Peter & Jane books after read ur blog some time ago. My son loves it very much. Now he can read some of the words.

    2. Yaa..Peter & Jane series are very good books.

    3. I’m glad that I got my Peter and Jane through hand me downs. My girl read almost the entire series and I’m now just starting with my boy. 🙂 They’re great as the first steps to encourage reading.

    4. I’m into phonics.. so I bought the phonics series instead of Peter and Jane.

Btw, your videos don’t work ler.

    5. i think i really should have got a series for jo..

    6. Me too…looking for BM story book, but, at the moment, I just teach Jona as much BM word as possible…so far so good…and Isaac also know BM word too!!

    7. clever la.. i better speed up Ian’s reading too

    8. I have the whole set of Peter and Jane but my kids got bored with them now, so I switch to Paul and Mary, just for the fun of reading. I guess I won’t have to worry about reading in English as they are going to international school later on, but as for Chinese, I’m still looking for a set as good as Peter and Jane.

    9. Jeriel don’t really like Peter & Jane series..
Maly version…hmmm got to check with my mom

    10. ::clap clap for Emily::

Shern’s mom: Thanks. She is 3 going to 4.

    12. Goin to the right kindy is really important for the child. I can tell that u are really pleased with the current one.

    13. Yes I think P&J series r reli good. Samuel used to read P&J in school. The teacher will flash the words contain in P&J. After they r familiar with the words, the teacher will ask the students to read. This is a one to one process. On average, Samuel can read a and b series in a month. Too bad because we shifted, we have to drag him out of that school. He has actually completed 3b. Now his current school is teaching phonics and not recognising words.
I actually wonder which one is better. Phonics or GD?

    14. I read the Peter & Jane series when I was a little girl, and see where that got me! 😀

    15. Yes, P&J is good series I like them too when I was young but nowadays the printing quality is no longer as good as before… En En is learning simple nouns and words from P&J too.
