The Squint
April 3, 2009My hubby and I discovered that Emily squint (“tau kei ngan”) her eye lately. Eyes are moving in different direction. She just recovered from cough and mild fever. My babysitter reported that her eyes are funny during her last fever. I didn’t notice it previously until this week.
Pic Credit: http://members.tripod.com/manisha_b/images/Squint.gifAbove is the picture of squint eyes. She can do both Estropia and Extropia. I tested her to see whether she has eye sight problem or maybe she inherited papa’s lazy eye. I wrote a few letters, big ones on the board to have her read to me from a distance. She could read the big letters. However when I wrote mid range one, she told me she cannot read and it is blur. The funny thing is when she tried to focus on the letters, her eyes squint.
Hrmm, I am not sure whether her sickness has something to do with it. When a child is sick, the eyes muscle may be weak and therefore causes the eye to squint. I saw some improvement as she recovered.
Anyway, I made an appointment with the Ophthalmologist, the eye doctor. I suspect Emily may need glasses. Today she had her eye checked and bingo, she is long sighted with astiq. Long sighted in her case is not “lo far”. In her case, her eyes over focus like the picture below. Image cannot register at the retina.
Pic Credit: http://www.ssc.education.ed.ac.uk/courses/pictures/vmay086.jpgHer preliminary result was 300 but after the eye drops that makes her pupil dilate, her reading was higher. Anyhow she was given the prescription and she has to wear glasses. After 6 months, she will have another appointment to see whether her situation improves.
By the way, she was very excited to choose her glasses. She told me, “Mummy I want the glasses, can flip one”. What she meant was she wanted one with sunglasses attached to it. Too bad, those are only for adult. Her glasses will be ready next Thursday. She looks very elegant in her new glasses. I wonder are there any contact lenses for long sighted??
No member in the family has long sighted but most of us are short sighted. Everyone in my family wear glasses, my parents, my bro & sis, my uncles and my aunts. Same goes for my hubby side. So why Emily is long sighted. The doc’s explanation was it is planted in the gen but Emily gets to expose it. Isn’t she unique?
She looks Cool!

Unwilling To Reveal
March 31, 2009Emily loves to tell me stories. She tells me what she did at school, her conversation with grandpa and what her friends did. She can go on and on and on…. Sometimes I have to tell her to be quiet so that I can talk. She loves to interrupt when I am talking to papa. Although many times I have told her to wait for her turn, she kept forgetting. She will reply me, “Later I will forget what I want to say”. By the way, Tim also does too.
Emily does not like to tell me anything that she does wrong or makes her look bad. Last week, she accidentally bumped into a girl that make the girl fall down & cried. I was not there but I heard other children telling me so. Emily kept very quiet. I didn’t want to make a scene there so I asked her nicely about it when she was in the car. She didn’t want to tell me what happen and she changed topics every time I asked her. Sigh.
This is not a good sign as I want her to learn to tell me everything, good and bad. So how do I do that? I guess I have to keep telling her it is alright to tell me things that she does wrong and hopefully she will not avoid telling me.

Mathematician In The Family
March 24, 2009Guess Who? STOPPPPPP…………….Please comment who you think it is before reading.
My dad is very good in Math although he is not educated. He can do mental arithmetic by adding numbers with 4 or 5 digits without any pen, paper or calculator. Math gens run in my and my hubby’s family. My brother took all the Math subjects in his University and he solved Math problem as a hobby. For me, my favorite subject is also Math and I love solving puzzles. My Math exercise book was always in demand in school too.
Anyway, I discovered a few days ago that Emily can do mental arithmetic. Yes, without counting fingers. By the way, her school has not started her on Math yet. She must be learning it when I was teaching Timothy.
It all started when Timothy and Emily was playing teacher student with me. They will ask me a math question like “What is 5 + 5?” I will give them the answer right away. Yeah I was showing them how “super” I am. :giggles: Emily will use big numbers like “What is 12+11?”
Yesterday, I was asking Emily some simple Math like “What is 4+4?”. She answered 8 without counting her fingers or writing on the board. I was shocked. I test her again. “What is 5+5?” She said 10. Either she has a good memory or she is counting in her brain. What do you think?
Here I captured this in the video. She is only 4 years and 9 months.

Two Of A Kind
January 23, 2009In some ways Emily is like me especially when it comes to SLEEP. She can sleep anywhere and anytime if she wants to.
Today, I was having an early telecon at home and Emily skipped school because we need to fix the car. My hubby left for work early and send the car in. Emily woke up, she didn’t find me or papa in the bedroom. She came to my study room and my phone headset was on. If she knows my headset is on, she knows I have a meeting. Usually she doesn’t disturb me.
She went back out but I heard no noise outside. After the meeting, I looked for her. I went up to her bedroom and she was sleeping. By the way, she woke up after 1 hour later. She is so different from Tim. First thing Tim would do is to go out and on the cartoon. He will not go back to sleep.
Yeap, I am the kind who can just fall back into sleep even after I have woken up.

Morning Person
October 23, 2008Both Timothy and my hubby is a morning person. However Emily and I are not. Emily has a hard time waking up in the morning, no matter how early she sleeps. Lately she been acting up and telling me she doesn’t want to go school. However when she is in school, she will tell a different story. She doesn’t dislike school but I think she prefers to sleep in.
Previously she didn’t give me much trouble and I suspect only after she recovered from her fever she started acting up. She wanted to stay home with mummy. Every day I been talking to her and hope that she will be a good gal in the morning. The funny thing is she will tell me she won’t cry tomorrow but when morning come she just cry! Let’s hope she can break her crying cycle.
Anyone has any tricks to make this gal of mine wake up automatically and go to school without any fuss?

Something About Friday
September 21, 2008It must happen on Friday, I am not sure why. Of all days, my children get sick on Friday most of the time, must be something about Friday. Friday is not a good day to be sick because none of my family pediatrician is available. There is no evening clinic and my children’s pediatric is off on Friday.
4pm: Friday afternoon, Emily threw up her lunch and vomited a few times. It must be a tummy virus. She even threw up while I took her to the hospital. Fortunately I brought a plastic bag with me. The doctor on duty confirmed that it is a tummy virus. He asked us to let her go on liquid diet, no oily and fried food. One interesting thing he said was, it will help her if she passes motion. That will get rid of whatever toxin in her.
I asked for a bottle of Probiotic to get some good bacteria for her tummy. I asked him about V or Y drinks, can I give her and get overdose of good bacteria. He said there is no harm because whatever overdose, the body will get rid. On top of that, those drinks may not have live bacteria in it too. Interesting isn’t it? Total cost me of the doc visit was RM138.00 and most of it was the medicine cost. Thanks goodness I can claim that back.
When we reached home, I gave her some medicine but she vomited everything out. Nothing can get in to her little tummy. I just gave her diluted Ribena, at least there is glucose for energy in a zippy cup. She zip whenever she wants to drink. She watched some cartoon and I sent her off to bed with no milk.
10pm: Later in the night, she had high fever and I gave her panadol. She threw up after panadol. Fortunately she threw up at the door of the toilet. I suppose she didn’t get to the toilet in time to throw up. Anyway, I cannot give her panadol again because I don’t know how much went in. I sponge her a bit and daddy put “cool fever” on her forehead.
After 2am: She slept and I monitored her throughout the night. Funny me, I was dreaming that she got up and wanted to vomit. I woke up and gave her the bucket, I placed bucket beside me in case she wants to throw up. I opened my eyes and she was sleeping soundly. However her body is still warm, I had to sponge her again. She drank water occasionally. I had the zippy cup next to her.
10 am: Saturday morning, she was feeling better. Fever is gone. I gave her 4oz of milk and she could drink. I asked her to sit on her potty to watch cartoon. She did and passed motion. Good for her. I gave her porridge with some tasty seed weed on it. She like it and ate some. She also had that for dinner. No vomiting. I didn’t give her any medicine but only 1 capsule of Probiotic. Doc said it is good to give 1 capsule every day. The rest of the medicine will be history.

Simply Beautiful
September 9, 2008Last Saturday I received a package from the postman. I always look forward when the postman comes because he may delivers some surprises for me or the family. 🙂 It was for Emily. I told her and she was all excited. It was 3 beautiful dresses made by Jess.
Immediately Emily wanted to put it on and I took my camera. She loved the tang lung yellow dress. Now she can wear it during mooncake festival celebration in our taman next week, carrying her tang lung. Here they are and aren’t they beautiful?
As for me, I caught a flu bug on Saturday and my system has been down since. However still no fever still…sigh. My nose is all stuff up and feeling very tired. Yesterday I had kerabu fried taufu and I can only taste spicy. I cannot taste sour or salty. :wall: My bak kut teh tasted blend, so is my hokkien mee. I lost my taste bud. Sad hor?
Worst is I am having department team building today. We will be watching “Money Not Enough”, tell me about it.

Cik Mina
September 2, 2008Emily has turned into Cik Mina. A malay name I gave her. She was giggling and called herself Queen Mina.
I wanted to get “baju kurung” for Emily. I didn’t know whether she would want to wear it or not. Now is the season to get malay clothes as the Raya festive month is coming. Yesterday was the start of fasting month also known as bulan puasa.
Anyway the other day, I was shopping with her in Giant and ask Emily whether she would like to wear baju kurung. She saw and she wanted. I wanted to get a nice blue or pink flowery pattern for her. They didn’t have her size. They were either too small or too big. This one that I got, the top fit nicely but the skirt was a little too long. I have to keep pulling it up for her. It was the only one left that is close to her size. Next time she wear this, I will double/triple fold up for her.
Why Queen Mina? She wore to church on Merdeka Day. As the same time, she made a crown in her Sunday School class. She wore the crown and called herself Queen Mina.

Call Me “SMART”
August 26, 2008Yesterday, daddy cut a pear for Tim and Emily. He put 3 pieces on each bowl. He put it on the table for them to eat. Tim was enjoying his mooncake. Daddy came around and took one piece to eat. Now on the table are 1 bowl of 3 and the other bowl of 2.
Emily came around to eat her pear. I said “Give me one piece”. She took the bowl of 2 and offered me. I took 1. Wow I thought she was very generous and nice of her to take the bowl of 2. Later she passed to Tim and asked him to take 1. Tim took 1.
She took the bowl of 3 and said “It’s all mine”.

The Flower Finally Blossom
August 22, 2008I remembered Emily didn’t want to wear any dresses. She preferred wearing tees and pants/shorts. She didn’t want anyone to tie her hair or put clips on it. She will pull everything down.
Now she is totally changed, every week when we go to church she wants to put on her lovely dresses. By the way, Jess can sew very pretty dresses. If you have a gal, go to her website to have a look. I got some from her.
The other day, she was playing with the Barbie doll that I purchased when she was 2. She didn’t know how to play then and it was on sale. She saw some a small packet of plastic and she asked me what it was. I told her that it was to make the nails pretty. At that instance, she demanded I made her nails pretty. Girls are always girls. Look.
Anyway, she ask me to buy her a princess gown. I wonder which ball she is invited to.
